If you live in Ontario, you have the option of looking around and picking the Ontario G1 test location that is more convenient to you.

There is a list of all the test centres in the province of Ontario that can be found online: Official DriveTest G1 Test Locations. G1 knowledge test is offered in all locations. The test can be done on paper in any centre, but some locations offer to take it on a computer as well.

You do not need an appointment to take the G1 test.

The knowledge tests are given on the ‘first come -- first served’ basis. You should plan your visit for no later than one hour before the centre closes, otherwise there will not be enough time for the document check and testing procedures.

The G1 test will assess your knowledge of traffic signs and road rules -- those are the two sections comprising the test. You are allowed to make 4 mistakes in each section, to still be able to pass the test. In other words, even if you make just one mistake in signs, but 5 -- in the road rules section, it will be a fail. You will get the results as soon as you submit your test to the agent. If you fail the test, you have a choice of paying the fee and taking the test again on the same day if you wish to do so.

The test is offered in English and French in all testing locations.

Please contact the DriveTest location near you, to find out which ones out of total 17 languages it currently offers for the test.

Licensing By-law 2002-189

Driving School Instruction – Prohibition of Instruction in a Defined Area/

Leçon de conduite – Interdiction dans un secteur delimite

Date:13 August 2008/le 13 âout 2008

On February 23, 2007, Council approved an amendment to Licensing By-law 2002-189, Schedule 2 relating to Driving School Operators and Driving Instructors to implement on a pilot project basis a prohibition on driving instruction within a specified area in Beacon Hill-Cyrville Ward.Council directed staff to report back on the effectiveness of the by-law.

Klugh

The “Prohibited Area” is a residential community near the Canotek Drive Test Centre and includes the area north of Montreal Rd, south of Rockcliffe Parkway, west of Shefford Rd and East of Blair Rd. Monitoring of the area by By-law and Regulatory Services reveals that the prohibition has significantly reduced the number of driving school vehicles in this residential neighbourhood.

During the Spring of 2007, soon after the prohibition was approved and enacted, residents continued witnessing a high volume of driving school vehicles.Following that initial period of adjustment by driving school instructors, a notice was mailed to licensed driving school operators advising them of the new regulation and consequences related to non-compliance.Patrols during the summer of 2007 revealed a significant reduction in driving school vehicles.

On July 15, 2008, in response to a complaint, an under cover By-law Officer observed over a five hour period, 8 driving school vehicles in the “Prohibited Area”. In each instance, the Officer was able to confirm that the driving school vehicle was in the area for the purpose of conducting a driving test with a uniformed MTO employee in the vehicle. You may recall, that the amending by-law exempts officials of the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) when conducting a driving exam from a driving school vehicle. We were able to clarify with the Ministry of Transportation Testing Centre that all of their examiners wear uniforms and thus were easily identifiable. Frequently, students use marked driving school vehicles for their road test.Driving school vehicles are permitted in the prohibited area while being used for the test.

Previously, on April 6, 2008, a By-law Officer monitored the area for nearly two hours and saw no violations.

In addition to responding to complaints by residents, pro-active patrols are ongoing. In 2008, By-law and Regulatory Services received no related requests for service. The low number of complaints attests to the success of the pilot project, as such By-law and Regulatory Services has integrated the regulation into the Branch’s operational responsibilities.

Related to this matter, in July 2008 the Ward Councillor has received a petition from residents living on Hubbard Crescent requesting that the prohibition be also applied to Ministry of Transportation agents undertaking driving test and that signage indicating this restriction be posted at the entrance to Hubbard Crescent.

As indicated at Committee the City of Ottawa does not have the legal authority to impose rules on a program that is administered by a higher level of government.By-law and Regulatory Services has contacted the Canotek Test Centre management, informed them of the petition and requested that consideration be given to the concerns of the residents of Hubbard Crescent, including requiring that examiners voluntarily avoid using Hubbard Crescent. The request has been forwarded to their Head Office and a response is expected shortly.

I trust that this information will be of assistance.
